Bearing and Pace Training with Gaps in the Map

For our members, we will have two orienteering training courses that will zig zag across a park in SE Portland with various bearing and pace exercises. The first course will be suitable for advanced beginners who are ready to do some easy bearing and pace navigation off trail. The second course will be more challenging with at least part of the course using a window-O format where you have to carefully use the bearing and pace skills you developed on the first course. Because this is a bearing and pace training event, your maps will be missing trails and possibly roads so that you have to rely on your bearing and pacing rather than linear features. The course setter, Tony Pinkham, will be on hand to explain bearing and pace techniques (and how to recover from mistakes) that you can easily use to complete these courses. Club members of all orienteering skill levels are encouraged to do both of these courses. The courses close at noon, after which we can go to a nearby cafe (to be announced) to relax and swap stories.

Location: Southeast Portland. For the exact meeting location and to reserve a map, contact Tony Pinkham by Oct 17.
